A couple months back, Teachers Pay Teachers asked it’s Instagram community what they wanted to see in resources online. A few of the answers were clear and obvious. “What about those of us who don’t use Google?” That was an easy one for me as an avid TPT creator. Most of my documents are already Microsoft based. However, I was surprised by the number of teachers asking for products that were not zipped.
As you can imagine, I spent quite a few weeks and months pondering a solution for some of my larger products. So, you don’t want the products in Google? That means a Google Folder Link is out of the question – which I totally understand having worked for an online school that blocked Google Drive access. Yet, if I zip it all into a folder, you have trouble retrieving it.
Let me step back for a moment. I am notorious for losing files on my computer to the point that I print almost everything and file it in bulky binders – a great solution until you decide to move 1400 miles… If I could print and send hard copies to everyone and anyone on Teachers Pay Teachers, I would most definitely do that. Who needs to go to actual work anyway?
Then I had an epiphany. During our distance/virtual learning endeavors, many of us resorted to Hyperdocs. We can stick everything the student needs access to into one Google Slides Presentation or a PDF. They click the links, do the work and parents don’t have to chase down websites and documents. Why can’t it be that easy for teachers as well?!
DUDE – It can!!!!
I believe I told you last week that I’ve been working diligently to complete the Creative Writing Unit. Well, today I decided that it needs a Cornell Notes component. Everything is better with Cornell Notes, right? Then I hit that same wall of how to add the notes without a link to Google or zipping the folder. As usual, I overthought the whole thing, got angry and walked away.
Today, I sat down and opened the document with fresh eyes. If I can drag a picture into a slide, why can’t I drag a document? And when I do, what happens? I basically made a hyperdoc within the Microsoft mini world! I know. You are wondering what rock I’ve been living under…
Moral of the story – these Creative Writing Units just became so much easier to use! Wait until I figure out how to make my own QR codes!! For now, embedded links will suffice.
